INFORMATIONAL LETTER NO.21

POLICY CODE:†† FE

TO:†††† †††††††††††     Superintendents Of Schools

FROM:               J. Duke Albanese, Commissioner

DATE:†††††††††††     September 22, 2000

SUBJECT:         Major Capital Improvements Application

Please find enclosed a copy of the school construction application to be used for new school construction projects, additions, and major renovations. As a reminder, rating cycles are a two-year process and the next opportunity to apply to the Major Capital Improvement Program will be in the summer of 2003.

As you will note, the application criteria rely heavily on local long range planning, not only for facilities and facility needs, but for the educational program to be offered as well. This revised format for application to the school construction fund represents the work over the past several years, of the Department of Education, the State Board of Education, the Governorís Task Force on School Construction, as well as a number of stakeholder groups.

These applications must be received no later than the close of business on July 31, 2001 to be eligible for consideration. All applications will be rated by a team of facility raters through a site visitation, resulting in a new priority list for school construction to be prepared and published in 2002.Therefore, if your school unit appeared on the priority list published in February 2000 as project number 23 through project number 70, your school district will need to submit a new application.

If you have any questions, or if we can assist in any way, please contact Scott Brown, Director of School Facilities Programs at 287-5906.
