Students Experiencing Education Disruption
 in Consideration of a
Maine Department of Education Diploma

Purpose of the Maine Department of Education Diploma:

The purpose of the Maine Department of Education Diploma is to provide a student residing in the state of Maine, who has experienced “education disruption” and is not able to meet the graduation requirements of his or her local school unit, an opportunity to seek a Maine Department of Education Diploma
The Governors Task Force was formed on June 27, 2006 and was charged to:

  • draft legislation to ensure that students who are experiencing educational disruption would have the opportunity to graduate.
  • develop a collaborative plan identifying strategies to engage Maine’s disengaged youth as reported in the Kids Count

On September 20, 2007 “An Act to Implement the Recommendations of Task Force to Engage Maine’s Youth Regarding Successful School Completion.” Chapter 451 became effective. Chapter 451 defines a process whereby students experiencing “educational disruption” will have the opportunity to earn an approved high school diploma.
