Chemical Inventory – Instructions

Who
Participants:  Principal, Chemical Hygiene Officer, Teachers, and Facilities Director
Responsibility:  Superintendent

What
As required by the Maine Department of Education rules, Code of Maine Regulations (05-071 CMR Chap. 161) and as the State of Maine adopted the U.S. Department of Labor Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Code of Federal Regulations (29 CFR 1910.1200 and 1910.1450), each school is required to comply with the chemical inventory requirement annually.

When
In the interest of safety and regulations, the school chemical inventory is due September 1 each year.  See the guidelines (listed below) for advance time needed to conduct an inventory.

Resources
The following resources are available to assist you with your inventory:

  • The laboratory chemical inventory form is located on-line at:  http://www.maine.gov/education/const/chem/chemical_inventory_form.xls     This chemical inventory form was developed by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to provide schools with a consistent list and format.  Until a new and updated resource is available, please continue to use this form.
  • A non-laboratory chemical inventory guide is located on-line at:   http://www.epa.gov/region2/children/k12/english/EHS-in-the-arts.pdf      Given that there are thousands of possible chemicals which fall into this category no form or list is available for schools to complete an inventory.  We ask that you simply use the same form as the laboratory chemical inventory.  Please list your non-laboratory chemicals alphabetically and complete the information requested on the spreadsheet.

Action Item
Please submit one electronic copy of your laboratory chemical inventory and one electronic copy of your non-laboratory chemical inventory per school building by e-mail to the Maine Department of Education School Facilities Services (Pat.Hinckley@maine.gov) using the following subject line in your e-mail (inserting the name of your SAU and school):

  • Chemical Inventory [fiscal year] – [name of SAU – name of school facility]

In the interest of safety and operations, it is important that each inventory be thorough and accurate.  If you have questions about your school chemical inventory please contact Pat Hinckley at 624-6886 or by e-mail at Pat.Hinckley@maine.gov .
