Former Governor Angus King's Proclomation

WHEREAS, the aims of public education extend beyond academics to values, attitudes, and the precepts and practices of democracy itself; and

WHEREAS, Maine’s Learning Results, which set common statewide expectations for what students should know and be able to do, include as a guiding principle the notion that every student should become a responsible and involved citizen; and

WHEREAS, Maine schools are working to implement the vision and recommendations to guide students to ethical and responsible behavior as described in Taking Responsibility; and

WHEREAS, the aftermath of the events of September 11 has inspired many of us to reflect on the fundamental character of our country, communities, and people; the nature of freedom and democracy; and the basic values for which we stand; and

WHEREAS, this reflection is important and healthy, and a reminder of the “teachable moment” that we may find even in the most distressing tragedies we face; and

WHEREAS, Maine students and youth are performing public service throughout September as a memorial tribute to September 11; and

WHEREAS, the need for a deeper understanding of the “idea of America” and its philosophical foundations connects to the mission of our schools and other institutions to make civic education contemporary and rich in meaning; and

WHEREAS, September 6, 2002 through September 16, 2002 has been proclaimed American Character Week on a national scale,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ANGUS KING, JR., Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim September 9th  – 15th, 2002 as

MAINE CHARACTER AND CITIZENSHIP WEEK

Throughout the State of Maine, and urge all citizens to conduct appropriate activities to promote awareness and appreciation of character and citizenship in Maine.
