Information on Adult Residents

Recently Arrested or Detained in or Sentenced to a Jail

If your family member or friend is incarcerated in a jail due to being recently arrested, please contact the jail for the county where the offense occurred for information about them. If your family member or friend has been ordered detained in a jail or sentenced to a jail by a court, please contact the jail for the county where the court is located for information about them. The Department of Corrections does not operate the jails.

Sentenced to a MDOC Facility

If your family member or friend is incarcerated in or been sentenced to a Department of Corrections adult facility, please first check the Adult Resident/Adult Community Corrections Client Search page for information about them. Be aware that we cannot provide any information other than what is contained on the Adult Resident/Adult Community Corrections Client Search page unless the resident has signed a release of information form for their information to be shared with you. Also, even with a release, some information is not able to be shared due to federal and state confidentiality laws.

Actual Release Date

If you are wanting to know your family member’s or friend’s actual release date (due to constantly changing variables, the “earliest possible release date” on the Adult Resident/Adult Community Corrections Client Search page is not necessarily the same as the actual release date), please contact the resident directly, as they will have the most up-to-date information about this.

Other Information

If you are inquiring about any action that an adult resident may appeal (discipline, custody level, transfers between Department facilities, transfers with another state, earning of good time, furloughs, work release, supervised community confinement, etc.), please allow sufficient time for the appeal process to be completed before contacting Department of Corrections staff.  Staff will not answer questions about appealable matters while the process is ongoing.

If a release has been signed and the appeal process has been completed, you may send your inquiries to corrections.classification@maine.gov, except for inquiries about discipline. Inquiries about discipline should be directed to the facility where your family member or friend is incarcerated.

Timelines for these appeal processes are outlined in the relevant policy:

Also, please review the relevant policy for general information before contacting Department of Corrections staff about any other matter.
