Job Description

A Revenue Agent is a professional level field auditor position located within Maine Revenue Services in the Department of Administrative & Financial Services. This is a two-year trainee classification (with a one-year probation period) which, upon successful completion and demonstration of certain specified competencies, results in reclassification to Senior Revenue Agent.  Extensive in-state and out-of-state overnight travel is required (up to 16 weeks annually).

Work includes performance of multi-tax audits of individuals, businesses, corporations, and other tax entities in the field under the supervision and oversight of senior personnel in order to determine tax liability and taxpayer compliance; and employing administrative processes to enforce state tax laws.

An employee in this classification initially works under close supervision as a part of an audit team, and then independently on selected work assignments.  This position requires excellent oral and written communications skills as well as the ability to deal tactfully with taxpayers and other professionals, both public and private.  The nature of the work requires the employee to exercise sound independent judgment and logical decision-making in the application of statutes, rules, policies, written guidance, and technical criteria to the facts found on audit.

CHALLENGES FACING THE POSITION/ORGANIZATION:

Challenges inherent in this job include having to analyze, understand, and work with varied taxpayer-maintained accounting systems and record keeping methods.  These can range from a simple one-write approach to extensive computerized accounting systems.

Revenue Agents must also communicate with individuals who have varying levels of knowledge of Maine tax law.  Adjustments in communication styles depending on the audience are required.

Challenges also include translating written tax statutes, rules, and policies into practical applications in the field.  The laws are not written specifically for individual situations and can be difficult to administer in practice.

REQUIREMENTS:

In order to qualify, you must have a Bachelors Degree from an accredited educational institution in Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, or a related area -OR- four (4) years of equivalent post-secondary education and/or professional level experience in business administration, accounting, and/or auditing.  You must be able to demonstrate strong accounting skills; basic computer skills (working with spreadsheets, databases, and word processing programs); good oral and written communications skills; the ability to interpret and apply legal concepts (translating tax law into practical applications); and prior experience dealing with the public.  Important qualities necessary for this job are empathy, self-motivation, planning and organizational skills, integrity, and patience.
