Fallen Heroes with Ties to Maine

The following servicemembers are Fallen Heroes with Ties to Maine. These servicemembers have given their lives in defense of freedom since September 11, 2001. The State of Maine recognizes the dedication, duty and ultimate sacrifice given by these servicemembers while serving our nation in support of combat operations.

March 20, 2003	CPL Brian M. Kennedy US Marine Corps CPL Kennedy, 25 of Houston, TX, was killed in a helicopter crash when his CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter crashed and burned in Kuwait. Brian was based at Camp Pendleton, CA. Maine tie is mother of Port Clyde, ME.
April 2, 2003	CW4 Erik A. Halvorsen US Army CW4 Halvorsen, 40, of Bennington, VT, was killed in a helicopter crash when his UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed in central Iraq. Eric was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, GA. Maine tie is father of Richmond, ME.
May 9, 2003	LCPL Cedric E. Bruns US Marine Corps LCPL Bruns, 22, of Vancouver, WA, died in a non-hostile vehicle accident in Kuwait. Cedric was assigned to the 6th Engineer Support Battaliion, 4th Force Service Support Group, Eugene, OR. Maine tie is grandparents of Bangor, ME.
July 27, 2003	SGT Heath A. McMillin US Army SGT McMillin, 29, of Canandaigua, NY, was killed South of Baghdad, Iraq while on patrol when he came under attack from rocket propelled grenade and small arms fire. Heath was assigned to the 105th Military Police Company, Army National Guard, Buffalo, NY. Maine tie is mother of Biddeford, ME.
November 7, 2003	CW5 Sharon T. Swartworth US Army CW5 Swartworth, 43, of Viriginia, was killed in action when the UH-60 Black Hawk helipcoter she was in was shot down in Tikrit, Iraq. Sharon was the regimental warrant officer for the Judge Advocate General Office, based at Headquarters Department of the Army, Pentagon. Maine tie is father of Litchfield, ME.
August 7, 2004	SSG Craig W. Cherry US Army SSG Cherry, 39, of Winchester, VA, died in Ghazikel, Afghanistan when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. Craig was assigned to the Army National Guard's 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 29th Infantry Division (Light Infantry), Winchester, VA. Maine tie is father of Windham, ME.
August 25, 2004	LCPL Alexander S. Arredondo US Marine Corps LCPL Arredondo, 20, of Randolph, MA, died in Najaf, Iraq as a result of enemy action. Alexander was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 1/4, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, CA. Maine tie is mother of Bangor, ME.
June 17, 2005	MSG Robert M. Horrigan US Army MSG Horrigan, 40, of Austin, TX, died in Al Qaim, Iraq while conducting combat operations. Robert was assigned to Headquarters, US Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, NC. Maine tie is his mother of Belfast, ME.
June 27, 2005	2LT Matthew S. Coutu US Army 2LT Coutu, 23, of North Kingstown, RI, died in Baghdad, Iraq, where enemy forces engaged his convoy with small arms fire. Matthew was assigned to the 64th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, TX. He attended the University of Maine.
December 15, 2005	SPC Joseph A. Lucas US Army SPC Lucas, 23, of Augusta, GA, died in Balad, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Joseph was assigned to the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, GA. Maine tie is father of Wiscasset, ME.
March 1, 2006	SPC Christopher S. Merchant US Army SPC Merchant, 32, of Hardwick, VT, died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq when his HMMWV came under attack by enemy forces using a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device and rocket-propelled grenade. Christopher was assigned to the Army National Guard's 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Regiment, Jericho. Maine tie is daughter of Bangor, ME.
August 28, 2006	SPC Matthew E. Schneider US Army SPC Schneider, 23, of Gorham, NH, died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq from a non-combat related cause. Matthew was assigned to the 141st Signal Battalion, 1st Armored Division, Wiesbaden, Germany. Maine tie is father of Kittery, ME.
November 11, 2006	SSG William S. Jackson II US Army SSG Jackson, 29, of Saginaw, MI, died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq as a result of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. William was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 16th Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Giessen, Germany. Maine tie is sister of Warren, ME.
May 8, 2007	SPC Kyle A. Little US Army SPC Little, 20, of W. Boylston, MA, died in Salman Pak, Iraq of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Kyle was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, GA. Maine tie is father of North Berwick, ME.
January 3, 2008	MAJ Andrew J. Olmsted US Army MAJ Olmsted, 37, of Colorado Springs, CO, died in As Sadiyah, Iraq of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire during combat operations. Andrew was assigned to the Military Transition Teamy, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, KS. He was born in Bangor, ME and has relatives living in Maine.
October 22, 2008	SPC Deon L. Taylor US Army SPC Taylor, 30, of Bronz, NY, died in Bela Beluk, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle enountered an improvised explosive device. Deon was assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, New York Army National Guard, Syracuse, NY. He graduated from Carrabec High School in North Anson, ME in 1995.
May 12, 2011	SGT Kevin B. Balduf US Marine Corps SGT Balduf, 27, of Nashville, TN, died in Afghanistan, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. Kevin was assigned to Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Cherry Point, NC. Wife from Richmond, Maine.
June 28, 2011	CPL Mark R. Goyet US Marine Corps CPL Goyet, 22, of Sinton, TX , died in Afghanistan, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. Mark was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentnine Palms, CA. Grandparents from Westbrook, Maine.
