Maine's Constitutional Officers
Updated through the 130th Legislature

Introduction

Maine's attorney general, secretary of state, and state treasurer are chosen biennially at the first session of the Legislature in a joint convention of the House and Senate (the Attorney General was appointed by the Governor until 1856). This legislative history includes legislation proposing to change how Maine's constitutional officers are selected, including proposals to abolish an office or change the office from a constitutional position to a statutory position. It covers the time period 1833 to present.
