AUGUSTA - In response to news that over 857,000 Mainers will receive $850 direct relief checks after the supplemental budget was signed into law Wednesday by Gov. Janet Mills, Rep. Mo Terry, D-Gorham, released the following statement:
"We are extremely fortunate to be in a position to provide these $850 relief checks to so many Mainers," said Terry. "It speaks to the quality of our leadership and incredible tri-partisan cooperation that has resulted in responsible fiscal policy throughout the pandemic. In order to receive your check, make sure you file a 2021 state income tax form before October 31, 2022. If you receive social security or have questions about how to file, call 211 or reach out to CA$H Maine for assistance."
Only full-time Maine residents are eligible to receive a check. Mainers who qualify include those who make up to $100,000 if filing single or if married and filing separately, $150,000 if filing as head of household or $200,000 for couples filing jointly.
Those who do not typically file a state income tax form but whose income falls within these categories, such as social security recipients, must file a 2021 tax return to receive the check. Social security recipients who have not filed a return can use an SSA-1099 form, which they should have received in the mail from the federal government at the beginning of the year.
The first round of relief checks is expected to be delivered by mail as soon as June 1. As more returns are received, checks will be delivered on a rolling basis through the end of the year.
Terry, who represents part of Gorham, is serving her third term in the Maine House of Representatives. She is a chef and small business owner with more than 25 years of experience in the food service industry. She serves as House chair of the Taxation Committee.
