AUGUSTA — Rep. Amy Kuhn, D-Falmouth, and Sen. Teresa S. Pierce, D-Falmouth, welcomed Maine’s first professional soccer club, the Portland Hearts of Pine, to the State House and introduced the team to the 132nd Legislature.
The “Hearts,” as they are known, formed after USL League One, a professional soccer organization, picked Portland as the location for an expansion team. The team will play its home games at Fitzpatrick Stadium and has been steadily establishing itself as a community builder across the state.
The team was co-founded by Gabe Hoffman-Johnson, who grew up in Falmouth. He was a prolific soccer player for both the local middle and high school teams, where he was named State Player of the Year and an All-American twice.
“The arrival of the Hearts of Pine is truly a cause for celebration,” said Rep. Kuhn. “From the outset, it was evident that founder Gabe Hoffman-Johnson and his team were dedicated to honoring and showcasing what makes Maine unique—our vibrant community. They have joined forces with community leaders throughout the state, working tirelessly to grow soccer in Maine. This team represents far more than just an economic driver for our state — it embodies the joy, camaraderie and steadfastness that defines Maine’s spirit.”
“It was so great to have the Hearts visit the State House," said Sen. Pierce. "Not only will they bring a new community experience to Maine, they’ll bring exciting economic potential to our restaurants, hotels and downtowns. This potential won’t just stay in Portland, with fans coming in for a game and staying to explore all our state has to offer. As a sports fan myself, I'm thrilled to have a new 'home team' to root for and look forward to attending many Hearts matches."
While they were at the State House, the Hearts were welcomed in the chamber of the House of Representatives and the Senate. They are set to play the first game of their inaugural season on Mar. 29 in Naples, Florida and their first home game at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland on May 4.
