On June 22, 2021, the State of Maine launched a new program aimed at helping Mainers with disabilities interact with law enforcement officers. The program is 100% VOLUNTARY and designed to bridge the barrier that may be caused by a cognitive impairment or other disability which might prevent or hinder the person's ability to communicate pertinent information to the officer. The Contact Person Program will allow our law enforcement officers to access a CONFIDENTIAL database that will connect the officer w/ a legal guardian or other individual who can assist the person participating in the program. The Contact Person Program was passed into law in 2019 (P.L.2019, ch. 442 - Title 25, section 2917) & is available by contacting any police department in Maine.
