Maine Teacher of the Year Selection
Process and Calendar of Events
All nominees must have Maine certification and hold at least a four-year degree. More than forty
teachers, principals, superintendents, parents, students, and business and
community leaders are involved in the process of selecting a Teacher of the
Year. The Maine Teacher of the Year program is deeply indebted to them.
November - Informational Letter and Nomination form mailed and/or emailed to all Maine Superintendents and Principals.
February - Nomination forms must be submitted
March - Dinner for all Nominees in Augusta
March - State House Hall of Flags Ceremony: Governor Baldacci and Commissioner of Education Gendron honor nominees; nominees invited to display students' work
April - Regional Finalists announced
April and May - Site visits to Regional Finalists' schools; representatives from the T.O.Y. Committee observe the teacher in class, interview students, parents, and colleagues
May to July - Regional Finalists work on professional portfolios
July - Oral presentations, Orono; Regional Finalists present a class lesson to a group of Graduate Students before a review panel. Portfolios are read and scored, Augusta. State Finalists are selected.
August - State Finalists interview with former Teachers of the Year, Augusta
September - Announcement of the Maine Teacher of the Year
November - Maine Teacher of the Year Banquet
The Maine Teacher of the Year becomes part of the National Teacher of the Year process. She/he also participates in four national events and numerous speaking engagements in Maine.
