Truancy, Dropout, Alt Ed > Summit Agenda Maine’s Dropout Prevention Summit Agenda July 27 and 28, 2009 Shelley Reed, Project Manager Planning Partners: Youth from Portland High School Alternative Education Program, Shared Youth Vision Council, Institute for the Study of Students at Risk, Truancy, Dropout and Alternative Education Advisory Committee Day 18-8:20 Check in and continental breakfast 8:20 America’s Promise Introductory Video Youth open summit 8:30-11:30 Youth play-theme-impact of dropping out Youth Video-youth are interviewing students, families, educators regarding impact of dropping out and re-engagement. Questions led to what did you do leading to dropping out and how did you decide to re-engage or if an educator or family member what was your influence. Panel- Supportive Youth Programs Panel- youth will present a complex scenario of a dropout and panel members made up of the agency commissioners (or their designees) will respond with services of support available presently and what would be the ideal support system. Q and A to follow. 11:30-12:30 Lunch 12:30-1:30: Participants will explore/visit exhibitors representing programs that support youth through the 15 dropout prevention strategies and 5 promises. 1:45-4:00 Workgroups divided into the 4 over arching categories of the 15 strategies Early Interventions, Basic Core Strategies, Instruction, and School and Community Perspectives. There will be 2 groups of each of the 4 categories. The participants will be facilitated by a youth and an adult pairing, and information from the sessions will be collected and written for distribution for day 2. the focus of the discussions will be what Maine currently offers, and where are the gaps in services. What’s working, what’s not? 1:45-2:45 What did you hear from the youth, what did you see as programs from exhibitors, what visions were created by panel discussion. 15 minute break 3:00-4:00 work groups Day 28-8:30 Continental Breakfast and check in 8:30-11:30 Workgroups –Targeted Plan Work. A plan to plan for action steps, timeline, and signatories committed to follow through. Lunch 11:30-12:30 12:30 -1:30 Maine’s Plan Presentation 2:00 Core Group meets to pull together next steps and prepare materials for distribution and follow up. |
