Education Funding in the Federal Recovery Package

(Updated 2/20/09)

Economic Legislation To Impact Maine Education Funding

The U.S. House and Senate both passed the federal economic recovery package, on February 13, 2009. The bill, H.R. 1, goes by the name: The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. It includes considerable funds for education to be distributed by states. These include additional funds for special education, Title I, school renovation/construction, and other areas.

These additional funds are only anticipated to be available for two fiscal years. The Department will work with school districts on ways to maximize the use of the funds while avoiding a future spike in local tax burden or the loss of programs when the funds are no longer available.

It is important to remember that all numbers, including spreadsheets from a variety of sources are preliminary.  To date we have not received definitive spreadsheets for the state or individual SAUs from the U.S. Department of Education.  We are continuing to research the details of this package and there are several areas where we will need guidance from USDE regarding eligibility for certain funds and how they can/must be applied.  For all these reasons, we urge utmost caution in drawing conclusions about what funds may be received and what they may be used for.  We will continue to provide details as they emerge.
