Program Description – written by Portland Education Partnership

The Portland Education Partnership offers after school tutoring from October through March focused on enhancing student achievement in math and English. In small classes of a maximum of 10 students that meet twice a week, tutors work with students, parents and their teachers to develop an individualized learning plan that includes goal setting and assessment - all of which align with the Maine Learning Results. Students and their parents can expect monthly progress report; and two parent/tutor/student conferences during the five-month program.

Whenever possible tutors will be certified teachers in the subject and grade level they are tutoring and all tutors will have at a minimum at least two years of college education. All tutors will work in consultation with a certified teacher and receive high quality training to insure effective tutoring.

The Partnership supports Portland's diverse population. There is no one research-based model that works for such a diverse group, however, tutors will work with classroom teachers to design appropriate individual learning plans that utilize the most appropriate learning strategies for each student. Pre-testing, ongoing assessment and post-testing will monitor student progress.
