What’s the State of Arts Education in Maine?Over the next three years, Maine arts educators will have an important opportunity to take stock of what they have been able to achieve and what goals they want to set for themselves and their communities in the coming years. Led by the Maine Alliance for Arts Education with funding from the Betterment Fund and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a wide partnership of arts organizations will be conducting a census of current arts learning opportunities in and out of schools in their communities. In the context of the statewide re-districting plan, the census will provide the basis for imagining new forms of collaboration to design broader systems of arts learning for children, youth and families. Phase I: Statewide Census and BaselineThe first stage of the work will involve the design, distribution and analysis of a state-wide survey of the types and sequences of arts learning Maine schools are currently able to offer. This work will include attention to courses, electives, clubs, and other school sponsored activities. Maine educators will have a chance to review a draft of this survey at the statewide conference, At the Creative Center: the Arts in Maine Schools, on October 5th and 6th. The revised survey will be administered statewide in the spring of 2008. In addition, in each community, the census will also engage teachers in working with a small but representative set of students to collect ‘learning logs’ in which they document the many ways and sites where they learn in the arts: in school, at home, on their own or in their wider communities. Phase I of the Census will also include gathering and analyzing existing data on arts education in Maine, using, for example, data gathered during the past ten years of the Maine Arts Commission’s Partners in Arts and Learning program. In the summer a team of students and arts educators will collaborate on an analysis of the data. In the fall of 2008, the data will be shared statewide in arts-focused town meetings Phases II and III Given additional funding, the work will widen out in Phases II and III. In Phase II, we plan to build on the information in the students’ learning logs to conduct more in-depth studies of how different types and sizes of Maine communities create substantial arts learning for their children and families by linking the efforts of homes, schools community and youth development organizations. We will also examine arts education in the new school districts. In Phase III (again, provided there is funding) we are hoping to profile communities in which such work is happening successfully and publish Census results in a variety of formats. Questionnaire for MAINE Providers of Arts Education Programming Note: These are the proposed questions for the Phase 1 census of school-based programs. Once finalized, these will be formatted for an on-line survey. What’s Covered in This Survey? This survey is organized in several sections:
