Safety Resources

There are rules from several different governmental agencies that impact school laboratory safety. Currently work is being done to create a simplier more coherent set of reference materials for educators. In the interim schools should reference the following documents.

  1. Hazardous Chemicals in Our Schools:
    1. Report of the Joint Standing Committee on National Resources
  2. Maine Department of Education Rules Chapter 161 - Purchase and Storage of Hazardous Chemicals
  3. Frequently Asked Questions about Chemicals in Schools
  4. School Chemistry Laboratory Safety Guide - US Consumer Product Safety Commission
  5. Maine Department of Environmental Protection Rules Chapter 850 et seq - Identification of Hazardous Wastes -- (Note: Chapter 850 is in Microsoft Word 7.0 format.)
  6. Hazardous Waste/Universal Waste
  7. Maine Department of Environmental Protection - Maine School Environmental Guide - May 2006
  8. U.S. Department of Labor - OSHA Rules - Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories -1910.1450
    1. Chemical Hygiene Plan (sample)
    2. Safety and Health Topics - Laboratories
  9. Ed Antz’s Cheat Sheet on Chemicals June 2006 - PDF
