RE: 4th Annual Energy Savings Tip Contest for All Maine 4th, 5th, and 6th Graders
On behalf of Governor John Elias Baldacci, Maine’s Office of Energy Independence and Security, and Efficiency Maine, I’d like to invite each of your 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students to participate in this year’s Energy Savings Tip Contest. The Governor will award prizes for the best energy saving ideas in two categories for each grade level: 1) how to save energy in your own home; and 2) how your school can save energy.
High energy prices have resulted in increased interest in energy conservation. October is Energy Awareness Month, a good time to focus on how we can save energy as we head into the winter heating season. In addition to saving money, energy conservation and efficiency will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and the serious risk of global warming.
This contest excites students about saving energy and inspires them to learn more about the topic. Once informed, school children retain the information throughout their lives, and spread their enthusiasm to other members of their households. Winning suggestions in prior contests have included “Use a fan instead of air conditioning to keep cool on warm days,” from Brittany Page, a 5th grader from Zippel Elementary School in Presque Isle and “Turn (the) heat down when you leave the house,” from Savannah Shurak, a 4th grader in Bloomfield School in Skowhegan.
Students are encouraged to submit 1 or 2 tips for saving energy in their homes and schools. Contest entries must be submitted by October 31, 2006 to Joy Adamson, Efficiency Maine, 18 State House Station, Augusta, Maine, 04333-0018 or students may e-mail their energy saving ideas to email@example.com with the words “Energy Contest” in the subject line. Please remind them to include their name, school, address, and grade level with their submission.
Good luck to all participating students!
