RE:                    Fingerprint Fees

Recent amendments to Title 20-A section 6103 provide that the Commissioner of Education shall charge a $55.00 fee for each criminal history record check.   In addition, the amendments provide for the establishment of the Criminal History Record Check Fund as a dedicated fund within the Department for the deposit of fingerprint processing fees collected.   The Fund is to be used to reimburse the Department of Public Safety, State Bureau of Investigation, for the costs of conducting the criminal history record check.

Beginning September 17, 2005 all school personnel who are required to be fingerprinted must pay the $55.00 fingerprint fee.   The Department is in the process of finalizing, with the Department of Public Safety and InforME, an online credit card payment option for individuals completing the online fingerprint registration process.   Those individuals who do not choose the credit card payment option may mail a money order to the Department, along with a note indicating several choices of fingerprint dates from those available.   While the Department is unable to guarantee specific dates, we will make every effort to accommodate individual requests.   We strongly recommend the use of the online credit card payment system whenever possible, as that method provides an opportunity to individuals to choose times and locations online to accommodate their schedules at the time of registration.

The final no-fee fingerprint detail will take place on August 27 in Warren.   The registration for that location will close on Sunday, August 21.   As of August 22, individuals will be able to register online for the Fall 2005 fingerprint locations, which begin on September 17 in Orono.   All individuals who register to be fingerprinted on or after September 17 will be required to pay the $55.00 fee.

Please note that the Department of Public Safety plans to retain a $25.00 nonrefundable processing fee, of the original $55.00 fee, from those individuals who fail to keep their fingerprint appointments or who fail to cancel their appointments before the registration for that date has closed.
