INFORMATIONAL LETTER NO:  51

POLICY CODE:  EBBA

TO:                 Superintendents, Principals and School Nurses

FROM:           Susan A. Gendron, Commissioner

DATE:            October 25, 2004

SUBJECT:     Preventing flu in students

Flu season is approaching and flu vaccine is in short supply.  To reduce the impact that flu can have on school attendance, the Bureau of Health has developed posters providing information to staff, students and their families to inform them about:

·        what they can do to prevent the spread of the flu virus and

·        which students should receive the flu vaccine.

These posters may be posted at school and printed as a two-sided handout and sent home with students.  They may be printed in color or black and white.  The posters are also available on the Bureau of Health web site at www.mainepublichealth.gov .

The Bureau of Health has a limited flu vaccine supply but they do have vaccine designated for high risk children.  It is important that parents know how to obtain vaccine for their children.

For additional information, you may contactDeEtte Hall, School Nurse Consultant at 624-6688 or e-mail at deette.hall@maine.gov .
