RE:                             Rulemaking for Medication Administration in a School Setting

 

The Department of Education is proposing rules that will provide guidance in the administration of medication to students during the student’s attendance in school programs to public schools and private schools approved for attendance purposes pursuant to 20-A MRSA § 2902.  State statute 20-A MRSA § 254 (5) requires the Department to adopt rules in the administration of medication.  The proposed rules will assist school administrative units in developing a medication administration policy that includes both the requirement that unlicensed school personnel be trained in medication administration prior to assuming this task, and the requirement that students be allowed to carry and self-administer prescribed emergency medications, specifically asthma inhalers or epinephrine auto injectors. 

 

A public hearing is scheduled for October 6, 2004, 10:00 AM to noon in room 103A of the Burton Cross Building, Augusta.  The deadline for written comments is October 18, 2004, 5:00 PM.  Written comments may be sent to:
