TO: Superintendents of Schools
FROM: Susan Gendron, Commissioner, Maine Department
of Education
DATE: July 19, 2004
SUBJECT: School Nurse Summer Institute and New
School Nurse Orientation
The Maine School Nurse Summer
Institute will be held at Thomas College
in Waterville on August 9 – 11, 2004. The Institute will provide an educational opportunity
for school nurses to stay current with changes in medical care and school
health practice.
The Institute
will also offer the first day of a three day Orientation for New School Nurses
on August 11, 2004. We encourage you to send new school nurses to
the Institute, including the Orientation.
The Orientation will provide basic information on the role and
responsibilities of a school nurse. It
will also provide an opportunity to learn and practice skills needed for school
nursing and the chance to meet with experienced school nurses. As the
transition from hospital or other nursing practice to school nursing is
significant, the Orientation will provide for a smoother adjustment to the
school setting. The two follow-up
Orientation days will be held during the school year. Continuing education credits will be offered.
For
information about registration to the School Nurse Summer Institute and New
School Nurse Orientation, contact DeEtte Hall,
School Nurse Consultant, Department of Education (624-6688 or deette.hall@maine.gov).
