Subject: 33rd Annual Student Transportation Safety Conference July 28-30, 2004 at Sugarloaf USA

The Department of Education is pleased to join with the Maine Association for Pupil Transportation (MAPT) and the Maine State Police in sponsoring the Annual Student Transportation Safety Conference. The conference will be held on July 28-30, 2004 at the Sugarloaf USA base lodge, Inn and Summit Hotel.

This year the program will include workshop and skill competition tracks that focus on the transportation of students with special needs and on bus fleet maintenance needs. This is a significant expansion in scope from prior years and demonstrates commitment by the organizations involved to provide training in best practices, effectiveness and efficiency across the full spectrum of pupil transportation. Based on past conferences, we expect between 500 and 600 drivers, mechanics and directors to attend the conference.

Attached is a letter of invitation and conference details from Kevin Mallory, President of MAPT. I join Kevin in urging you to support participation by your pupil transportation staff and also to encourage you to attend all or part of the conference program. Pupil transportation is an essential service for our educational program in Maine. It is an area where safety is a constant concern, cost is rising rapidly, service requirements are becoming more complex, and efficiency and cost effectiveness are hard to measure.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Kevin Mallory via email at:, or Harvey Boatman at:

Please join us at Sugarloaf USA for a great program.
