RE:                   Learning Results Implementation Timelines

Please be advised that two provisions recently enacted by LD 1924 “An Act to Reduce the Cost of Local Government through Increased State Education Funding and Provide Property Tax Relief” amended Title 20-A, Section 6202-A, subsections 3 and 4 and Section 6209 subsection 3.

Section 6202-A, subsections 3 and 4, as amended, delay the use of Learning Results standards in mathematics and English language arts for determining graduation.  The requirement that high school graduation at public schools and at certain private high schools be determined by student achievement of the standards in the five content areas of English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and health/physical education is now required by the 2007-2008 school year.

In addition, subsection 6209 subsection 3 delays the requirements that school administrative units implement the standards in the content areas of career preparation, foreign languages, and visual and performing arts by one year to the 2007-2008 school year.

Timelines for implementation for local assessment systems did not change.

This letter simply provides notice of the enactment of these two amendments to help with planning for next year.  More detail regarding this issue and the implementation of local assessment systems will follow in a subsequent Informational Letter.

Additionally, the details of LD 1924 as they relate to Essential Programs and Services and related school funding matters will also be addressed in a subsequent Informational Letter.
