RE:                   School Calendars

The Maine Department of Education has been charged by the Legislature’s Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs to report back to the Committee regarding efforts to coordinate sending school calendars with the calendars of the applied technology centers and regions. Committee members are concerned about the large number of dissimilar instructional days between many centers and regions and their sending schools.

I am requesting that the directors of the applied technology centers and regions and the superintendents of the sending schools please do the following:

1.      Gather and analyze the data in each applied technology center and region with regard to the number of dissimilar instructional days between that center or region and its sending schools;

2.      Develop a plan of action to reduce the number of days that the Career and Technical Education (CTE) students are adversely affected by the lack of coordination of instructional days; and

3.      File a report with the Career and Technical Education Team of the Maine Department of Education by March 15, 2004 that (a) identifies the number of dissimilar days adversely affecting CTE students and (b) outlines the progress made in addressing this problem.

The Department of Education will report your action plans and the progress you have made in addressing the problem to the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee in April 2004. Please contact Yvonne Davis at (207) 624-6730 or e-mail her at yvonne.davis@maine.gov if you have any questions.
