RE:                   Announcing Local Educational Agency Homeless Liaison Training Dates

 

            Subtitle B of Title VII of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. 11431 et seq.), amended and reauthorized as part of the No Child Left Behind

Act, stipulates “local educational agencies will designate an appropriate staff person, who may also be a coordinator for other Federal programs, as a local education agency liaison for homeless children and youths.” Training sessions for local educational agency homeless liaisons will be held in September at the following locations:

 

            Presque Isle      Northern Maine Technical Center         9:00-3:00         September 12

                                    Christie Lecture Hall                            

 

            Augusta            Augusta Civic Center                            9:00-3:00         September 16

                                    Capitol/Pine Room                              

                       

            Portland           Holiday Inn by the Bay                         9:00-3:00         September 26

                                    New Hampshire Room

 

            Registration will be from 8:30-9:00 in Augusta and Portland and is limited to 75 persons.  The Lecture Hall at NMTC will be open at 9:00 (due to a class occupying the Hall until 8:55). Lunch will be provided at all sites from 12:00-1:00 as well as early morning and afternoon beverages.

 

            Participants will receive training pertaining to:

·        Local implementation of the McKinney-Vento Act;

·        Identification of homeless youth and children in their school districts;

 

 

·        Conducting sessions to raise the awareness of and sensitivity to homeless issues with staff and students; and,

·        Ensuring the enrollment and educational participation of homeless children and unaccompanied youth.
