RE: Department of Education's Move to the Burton M. Cross State Office Building
I wish to take this opportunity to share with you our excitement here at the DOE surrounding our impending move to a new, state of the art facility. As of January 2, 2001, the Maine Department of Education will relocate to the 5th floor of the newly renovated state office building, which is adjacent to our present facility and to the Capitol. For the first time in many years, our agency will occupy and operate in one facility. This includes all those staff who are currently housed in our Stone Street facility across the river.
I'm sure you can appreciate the complexities associated with moving an agency of our size. The process was initiated over 2 years ago and Department of Education staff devoted an enormous amount of time, boundless energy, and superb teamwork to make this move as smooth a transition as possible. During this time, Judy Malcolm and Michael Kucsma have provided yeoman efforts on behalf of DOE.
As we draw near to the actual move dates, which will commence at noon on Thursday, December 28, 2000 and be completed by Monday, January 1, 2001, we ask your indulgence regarding any inconveniences which may result due to our inability to provide services to you during this period. And may I apologize in advance for our lack of capacity to communicate with you during the move - telephone systems, e-mail, US postal services will all be suspended beginning Wednesday evening, December 27, 2000; these systems will be up and running Tuesday, January 2, 2001. The Stone Street Facility will be "down" January 4-5, 2001, as those Department employees move to the new facility. In addition, we must restrict access to our current facility and our new facility to authorized personnel only. While we welcome visitors to our agency as a matter of practice, we must close the facility to the public during the move. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this action may cause.
Once we are fully relocated and "reconnected" we look forward to hosting meetings with you. We will plan an "Open House' early in the new year so you can be introduced to the facility and it's layout. (It would be a huge understatement to say that our 'new digs' will be easier to navigate than our present, very tired facility!)
On behalf of the Department of Education, best wishes to you for a happy holiday season and a healthy and rewarding new year!
