SUBJECT:      Web-based School Profiles

††††††††††† With yet another Maine summer maturing toward the days of autumn, most of you are scurrying to ready schools for their opening, or if you are one of our Aroostook colleagues youíre settling into the routines of the school year, awaiting the harvest break.

††††††††††† To all of you, your staffs, and students, I wish the best for a smooth opening of school and a profitable year of learning.

††††††††††† In the next few weeks, the Department will be finalizing a project that has been in the works for sometime, an initiative that relates to one of the promises of our collective efforts to strengthen K-12 education:communicating regularly to our constituents about progress using key indicators of performance.

To this end, I am pleased to announce that the Departmentís School Profiles will be publicly accessible on the Departmentís WWW Site by September 22, 2000.The purpose and scope will be to share continuously important data with our public.Our School Profiles will include:

        school level data, as well as school unit data; and

        more accessibility and usage among both educator and general public audiences, as a result of using the WWW for distribution of the profiles.

Data to be included in the initial release of the School Profiles include:

        staff data, including educational attainment of staff and salary scale data;

        fiscal data (for school units only), including per-pupil expenditures and tax rates;

        MEA test results; and

        other pupil outcome data, including graduation rates, dropout rates, and percentage of students intending to enroll in higher education.

Significantly, before the profiles are publicly accessible, I am providing you the WWW address of the School Profiles, so that you have the opportunity to review the data for each of your schools and school units, advising us of any discrepancies.The WWW address is http://janus.maine.gov/education/profiles/profilehome.htm.

If you have any questions or comments regarding the School Profiles, I invite you to contact Jim Watkins or Charlotte Heath at (207) 287-5841.
