INFORMATIONAL LETTER # 12

POLICY CODE:  GFC

TO:               Superintendents of Schools

FROM:         J. Duke Albanese

DATE:          8/11/00

RE:               Status of Criminal History Records Check

As the start of school rapidly approaches, especially in Aroostook County, I am writing to update you on the status of the Criminal History Records Check.  Be advised that it has taken longer than expected for the prints to be checked and results sent to the Department of Education.  This is a one-time phenomenon, as the full system gets underway.  Overall, we are well ahead of the five-year fingerprinting timeline.  Even with the additional staff we have added for this period, the actual mailing of notification cards to these personnel will take more time.

This will mean that most school units will start school without the confirmation from personnel that they have a current certification, authorization, or approval card.  We are exploring ways to address this situation and we will keep you apprised on a weekly basis until all personnel have been notified of their status.

New hires who have not been fingerprinted are responsible for making application to the Department and determining whether fingerprinting is required at the present time.  Times, dates, and locations of monthly fingerprinting sites in at least four locations statewide are posted at:
