Maine has 286 school administrative units that are comprised of 492 municipalities.  Click here for Definitions These school administrative units are served by 157 Superintendent of Schools' Offices; 48 offices serve more than one school administrative unit and 3 superintendents serve more than one office.

      * 27 municipalities belong to more than one type of school administrative unit structure --
 2 municipalities are members of two separate Community School Districts; 2 municipalities are members of a School Administrative District and a Community School District; 1 municipality is under an Agent of the Commissioners and a member of a Community School District; the remaining 22 municipalities are school administrative units in school unions and  are members of a Community School District.

 

There are 818 schools in Maine--697 public and 121 private.  According to Maine Statute an Elementary school means that portion of a school that provides instruction in any combination of kindergarten through grade 8.  A Secondary school means that portion of a school that provides instruction in any combination of grades 9 through 12.  Listed below are totals in a variety of grade combinations that are commonly requested by the general public.  Note a school count may be included in more than one grade combination.
