The Charcoal Kilns at Katahdin Iron Works

kilns.jpg (81299 bytes)

This view of the brick charcoal kilns was taken from atop the furnace. At the peak of operation, sixteen of these kilns rendered cords of wood down to the charcoal that fueled the furnace. The kiln closest to the camera (center) is the only one that still remains intact.
