Peak Color Now Canvassing Maine

AUGUSTA, Maine – October 15, 2003

After announcing the arrival of peak leaf color in their three northernmost foliage tracking zones last week, Maine Forest Service rangers note that the state's four remaining tracking zones have also reached peak color, according to the final fall foliage report from the Department of Conservation.

Overall, rangers are reporting peak, or greater than 85 percent, color change in the tracking zones covering all of eastern, central and southern Maine , including the entire coast. Foliage in Aroostook County , northern Piscataquis County , Somerset County , and the western Maine mountains is now past peak.
Leaf drop is high, or close to 70 percent, in the areas where foliage is past peak. Central, eastern and Downeast Maine have moderate, or close to 50 percent, leaf drop, while the southern coast has lost less than 30 percent of its leaves.
