HAMPDEN ? Governor Paul LePage will join Maine Attorney General William Schneider and Maine Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Pattie Aho at a press conference Friday to announce the state?s securing of a settlement for the second largest environmental penalty in Maine?s history.

The announcement will be held at noon on the shores of the Penobscot River at Hamlin?s Marina in Hampden, just one mile away from where more than 140,000 gallons of oil was discharged over several decades, leading to the state?s largest ever oil terminal cleanup effort and the high six-figure settlement, which is pending but has been agreed to by all parties.

The settlement is in addition to a multi-million dollar remediation effort by the responsible party that is ongoing in Hampden and is being overseen by the Maine DEP.

At Friday?s press conference, Governor LePage and other state officials will announce the specifics of the settlement, including the responsible party and how exactly the money will be used to further environmental protection and conservation, as well as the economic development and job opportunities that will be created as a result of the settlement investment.
