Municipal Solid Waste - Recycled

In 2016, Maine recycled 442,218 tons of the total 1,201,856 tons generated resulting in a 36.79% recycling rate.

It is the goal of the State to reduce the amount of municipal solid waste disposed of each year and to recapture materials from the waste stream through reuse, recycling and composting activities. Overall, the tonnage of waste generated has remained fairly stable over the past several years, even as the economy improved. However, Maine's recycling rate declined slightly these past few years.
