Red Meat and Poultry Inspection
Sanitary inspection on a bandsaw
The Maine Red Meat and Poultry Inspection Program started daily inspections on June 16, 2003.
The program is regulating the wholesomeness and quality of Maine's meat and poultry, and ensures the consumer a safe product. The program is at minimum, equal to the current USDA Inspection System.
The objective of the Meat and Poultry Inspection program is to assist Maine's very small to medium sized meat and poultry processors by providing state inspected slaughtering facilities. This, coupled with timely, local decision-making will build on the success of the current industry while promoting additional business within the state. If you are interested in state inspection, or have any questions, please contact: Henrietta Beaufait at (207) 287-7512: or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry and the Maine Red Meat and Poultry Inspection Program is an equal opportunity provider and employer. Read the USDA Non-Discrimination Statement.

- State Inspected product is for sale only within the State of Maine. USDA inspected product can be shipped interstate and sold on the internet. All domestically raidised red deer/elk must be slaughtered/processed at an inspected establishment if offered FOR SALE.
- Most State Inspected and USDA Inspected establishments are also licensed for Custom slaughter/processing3. When scheduling for slaughter be sure to ask for an inspector to be present if you want to sell the product at retail or wholesale.
- Custom slaughter/processing means the product is marked "NOT FOR SALE" and cannot be sold. When the meat is intended as NOT FOR SALE, a record should be completed and given to the owner of the custom meat/poultry establishment. You may download a PDF file of the forms here. Choose one of the three pages according to the type of slaughter or processing.
