Forest Rangers visit Islesboro

October 11, 2013

As part of the Firewise Communities USA program, Fire Prevention Specialist Kent Nelson and Forest Ranger Scott Maddox completed wildfire risk assessments on the coastal island of Islesboro. They also met with the Fire Chief and Town Manager to discuss how the MFS "Defensible Space Chipping Program" can be used in 2014 to reduce the fuel loading in the forested areas near homes. On Sept. 11, 2013, a strong windstorm knocked down many trees, mostly on the western side of the island. While the roads have been cleared and the power restored, there is still a significant amount of damaged trees that could add to the fire risk next summer.
