Rangers charge local man for carelessly starting a 10 acre fire in St. Francis

Rangers issued a summons for unlawful disposal of lighted material to the person responsible for the fire in St. Francis that burned over 10 acres and cost more $13,000.00 to suppress. The investigation of the fire revealed that a carelessly discarded cigarette was the ignition source for the blaze. As a result of the negligent cause of the fire, the town of St. Francis will be seeking restitution in the case. In addition to St. Francis Fire Department forces and two Maine Forest Rangers, resources were called from Allagash Fire Department and Fort Kent Fire Department. Personnel from Irving Woodlands LLC, and several local logging contractors also responded to the fire with equipment and manpower.
