Boards and Commissions

Welcome to the Governor's Office Department of Boards and Commissions.

This department is responsible for the oversight of Governor Mills' appointments to boards and commissions throughout our state. The Governor appoints over two thousand Maine citizens to serve on over three hundred boards and commissions. These boards involve nearly every aspect of Maine life.

The Governor is always looking for qualified candidates to serve on the state’s various boards and commissions. If you are interested in being considered for appointment to a particular board, please submit a letter of interest, an updated resume, and a completed Application for Gubernatorial Appointment Form (Word) to our office via email at boardsandcommissions@maine.gov; or mailed to:

Letters of recommendation are valued but not required for consideration. Submitting an application does not guarantee appointment.

Throughout this site, you will find information on the appointment process, policies, and announced appointments.

Categories

There are two basic categories of boards and commissions: Personal and Confirmable. They each require slightly different application materials, which can be reviewed on our Process tab.

Confirmable appointments require a public hearing to be held before a joint standing committee of the State Legislature, as well as final confirmation by the Maine State Senate. Personal appointments, which include Licensing and Regulatory Boards, do not require a public hearing or approval of the State Legislature. You can view a complete list of both confirmable appointments and personal appointments.
