Many Maine workers and businesses are having to look farther afield to meet their needs due to the economic consequences of the pandemic – employers to find qualified employees, and people to find job opportunities that match their skills. Expanding access to reliable transportation, especially in rural Maine, to connect workers to employment opportunities supports economic security and workforce development.
The Workforce Transportation Program will provide competitive grants to local and regional partnerships piloting ways to connect workers and employers through ridesharing, vanpools, and other subsidized transit options. In addition to supporting transportation of workers from rural areas to more urban centers of employment, a portion of funds will be targeted specifically to connecting workers in rural areas to employment opportunities in rural areas.
Applications may be submitted by employers or groups of employers, municipalities, non-profit organizations, human service organizations, and public/private transportation providers.
