Increase Licensing Efficiency

Department of Environmental Protection

Allocation: $13,000,000

Status: Active

A timely and fair permitting system is crucial for recovery from the negative effects of the pandemic on Maine’s economy. Many business investments involve construction and operation of facilities that require environmental permitting, particularly land use, stormwater management, wastewater discharges and waste management. The state’s outdated technology systems lack modern self-service functions, making obtaining required licenses and permits difficult.

With funding from the Maine Jobs & Recovery Plan, Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection is making licensing easier, faster, and more predictable for businesses and more transparent and accessible to the public. This work will involve replacing legacy technologies with a modern online licensing system for environmental and other state licenses, streamlining workflows, and adding temporary capacity to provide more rapid permitting during Maine’s recovery.
