Fish Hatchery Infrastructure Revitalization

Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

Allocation: $20,000,000

Status: Active

Maine's fish hatchery program, established in 1895, is one of the longest-running and most productive such programs in the United States. Every year, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s eight hatcheries produce more than 1 million trout and salmon species to ensure healthy populations in Maine’s inland waters, entice anglers, and support the state’s outdoor economy – a vital sector during the pandemic.

This Department will make critical investments in two of Maine’s oldest hatcheries, in New Gloucester and Grand Lake Stream, to increase capacity and better manage threats to fish from disease. These funds will also help improve management of waste effluent from all 8 hatcheries, which will improve conditions of receiving water bodies.
