Hiking Preparedness
Sound Good?
Even short hikes should be planned accordingly.
Be smart. Wear proper footwear when going for a hike to be prepared for the Maine outdoors.
Be Smart. Be Prepared.
Hiking is a great way to get outside and enjoy Maine, but as a Keeper of the Maine Outdoors, you should be conscious of what could happen and be prepared – as the saying goes, "plan for the worst and hope for the best!"

Before you lace up your boots and hit the trails, take a moment to carefully choose your trail, check local conditions, and review these reminders from the Maine Warden Service:
- Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return.
- Know that conditions will vary significantly across the state and at different elevations. Especially in the spring and fall, trails may be covered with ice and snow in some parts of the state.
- Pack a flashlight (not just the one on your phone) just in case! And remember it gets dark much earlier in the spring and fall months than in the summer.
- Dress for the weather and in plenty of layers.
- Wear hiking boots with ankle support and good tread, avoid icy conditions, and pack a pair of crampons or ice creepers just in case.
- Be prepared for no cell phone service. Know your route without the help of your cell phone.
- Pack essential items, including high-protein snacks, water, personal medicine for two days, and a fire starter.
- Be aware that roads may be impassable due to mud and/or snow in the spring. Have a plan B.
- Respect the land by picking up after yourself and staying on the trail.
- Be prepared, stay safe, and have fun out there. Happy trails!
