The SPF-SIG works to decrease morbidity, mortality, injury, and disability related to substance use/abuse. To do this the focus of the work is on reducing alcohol abuse, high risk drinking, marijuana use, prescription medicine misuse, and methamphetamine use.

The Maine SPF SIG in the Office of Substance Abuse is focused on decreasing morbidity, mortality, injury, and disability related to substance use/abuse. To do this the focus of the work is on reducing alcohol abuse, high risk drinking, marijuana use, prescription drug misuse/abuse, and methamphetamine use.

The steps needed to help accomplish this includes:

  • Collecting and analyzing data;
  • Conducting needs, resources and capacity assessments;
  • Utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data to set priorities;
  • Utilizing data and research to set a course of action;
  • Compiling the data and priorities to create a collaborative substance abuse prevention strategic plan, and last;
  • Bring the plan to fruition through partnering and integrating activities and funding with other agencies and organizations.
