DONEE ORGANIZATIONS

Priority Donee Notification: Early Access for Eligible Donees

In accordance with state statute, all items received by Maine Surplus are first made available exclusively to eligible donees for an initial period of two weeks to one month before being offered through public sale, liquidation, or disposal. This ensures that public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and other qualifying donees have the first opportunity to claim surplus items before they are made available through other means. **The items listed below are currently available to eligible donees only.**

Special Donee Programs

Certain donee groups -- such as fire departments, municipalities, and public safety agencies in Maine -- are eligible for special donee programs explained below.

Computer Program: Maine Fire Departments

Under Maine State Statute, fire departments can acquire one personal computer for $35 or less. Maine Surplus has a wide variety of computers and laptops for sale. We currently have basic laptops with Windows 10 available for $35 to Maine fire departments.

Eligibility

To participate, the fire department must:

  • Be located in the State of Maine;
  • Agree to use the computer for "reporting to the State Fire Marshall as required under Title 25, section 2395"; and
  • Hold a current, active donee status with Maine Surplus. (If your department is unsure of its status or needs to apply or renew, please contact surplus@maine.gov.)

How to Purchase a Computer

Visit the Maine Surplus warehouse at 85 Leighton Road in Augusta, Monday through Friday, between 8:00am - 3:30pm to view our current inventory and purchase a computer.

Law Enforcement Vehicle Program: Maine Municipalities & Public Safety Agencies

Maine Surplus, in coordination with Maine State Police, offers a special program for qualifying municipal and public safety donees to receive retired law enforcement vehicles. These vehicles come directly from active service with the State of Maine and are often already outfitted for law enforcement use, including installed blue lights, partitions, and other police-ready features. Unlike standard surplus vehicles, these are not decommissioned prior to release through this program, make them a valuable resource for towns seeking cost-effective, operationally ready patrol vehicles.

Eligibility

To participate, agencies must:

  • Be a municipality or public safety/law enforcement entity within the State of Maine; and
  • Hold a current, active donee status with Maine Surplus. (If your agency is unsure of its status or needs to apply or renew, please contact surplus@maine.gov.)

How to Request a Vehicle

1. Contact Sgt. Eric Bronson - Maine State Police Fleet Manager

Sgt. Bronson or a designated colleague will help coordinate available vehicles suitable for your department's needs.

2. Once identified, the selected vehicle will be transferred to the Maine Surplus vehicle lot for processing.

3. The vehicle will be made available to the requesting town or agency for purchase on the standard Donee Day, held the third Thursday of each month, at the Maine Surplus facility.

Vehicle Condition Notice

The vehicles are retired from active State Police service for specific reasons, including:

  • The vehicle's mileage has exceeded internal thresholds for continued patrol use; or
  • The cost of required repairs or maintenance outweighs the value of continued operation compared to replacement.

While many vehicles remain operational, some may require additional repair or maintenance before being ready for road use. All vehicles are sold as-is, without warranty, and are subject to the same terms as other surplus property sold by Maine Surplus.

Expedited Requests

In urgent situations, agencies may request early access to a vehicle through an Emergency/Expedited Transfer Request. To submit an expedited request, complete and return this Emergency Sale Request Form.

Program Benefits

  • Access to law enforcement-ready vehicles already equipped with police features
  • Streamlined process between the Maine State Police and Maine Surplus
  • Cost-effective alternative to purchasing new vehicles
  • Continued support for Maine's municipalities and public safety partners
  • Ability to receive a needed replacement vehicle in an expedited manner in the event of an emergency
