Who can give me legal help with my immigration case?
Immigration attorneys and accredited representatives are the only people who can give you legal advice about your immigration case.
Immigration Lawyers
A lawyer who is licensed and in good standing in any state can be an immigration lawyer in Maine. You can look up your immigration attorney to make sure they are a real attorney.
- If your attorney is licensed in Maine, you can look them up using the Maine Attorney Directory
- If your attorney is licensed in Massachusetts, you can look them up using the Massachusetts Attorney Search
- If your attorney is licensed in New Hampshire, you can call the New Hampshire Bar Association at (603) 224-6942.
- If you need help finding an immigration attorney, visit the American Immigration Lawyers Association
Accredited Representatives
Accredited representatives are allowed to help with immigration cases, even though they are not attorneys.
To see if a person is an accredited representative, please visit US Dept of Justice Recognized Organizations and Accredited Representatives
Self-Help
The wait for an immigration attorney or an accredited representative can be long! While you wait, there are resources to help you handle your case yourself.
Please visit Executive Office for Immigration Review | Self-Help Legal Materials (justice.gov) to access self-help guides and information about self-help clinics.
If a person who is not a laywer or an accredited representative has charged you money to help with your paperwork, help us stop them! Please file a report online.
