OLDER WORKER COMMITTEE MEETING 04/23/2018 Present: Don Harden, Peaches Bass, Jim McGrath, Melinda Wildes (phone)

Absent: Cindy Johnson, Peter Letourneau, Dave Collins, Michael Carroll, Sandra Butler

Welcome and Introductions: Cheryl Moran opened the meeting with welcomes and introductions. The committee was unable to appoint the new Chair due to unforeseen circumstances. Goal: appoint new Chair prior to the next meeting.

Silver Collar Award: Cheryl Moran stated we will start accepting Silver Collar Award applications the 2nd week of June. Winners will be announced during National Employ Older Workers Week (last week in September) as in previous years.
She also asked committee members to start thinking about whom they may want to connect with as possible applicants. She stated if each of us could connect with 2 employers, we would surpass last year?s.

Other: Don Harden reported that Alzheimer?s Disease in the workforce came out of this Legislation however; the Bill was killed in agreement to set-up this workgroup. He stated they have had 3 meetings so far. Ultimately, a toolkit or informational package for employers will come out of this that will educate them about Alzheimer?s and Dementia. He also stated he mentioned to this group about the Older Workers Committee. He pointed out that caregivers are dealing with this at home. The question is, how do you become an Alzheimer?s/Dementia friendly workplace? Don stated he would like to add ?Do you have management training for cognitive decline? Alzheimer?s/Dementia? to the Silver Collar Award application. Peaches Bass provided a website for committee members to look at; https://askjan.org/index.html This website advises on how to accommodate people with different disabilities. This can be added to the Toolkit.

Don Harden reported that he attended a seminar Framework Institute which have developed strategies on reframing aging. It teaches people to change perceptions about what it means for America to get older.

Next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 22 from 10am ? Noon in the Marion Martin room, CMCC 45 Commerce Drive, Augusta.
