Younger Workers Committee April 30, 2015

Present; Denise Smith, Janie Small, Lisa Hartnet, Mike Jordan, Scott Good, Kristen Chandler, Ann Wheeler, Dave Wurm, Meg Harvey, Paul Lepaurlo Staff; Garret Oswald

Denise Smith opened the meeting with welcomes and introductions. First on the agenda was an update regarding the SWIB Data workgroup by Paul Leparulo. Paul said the group has two key challenges ? Better info on demographics and to understand the program outcomes (jobs, earnings, ...). Paul said that the data system set up by MDOL is good but lacks a common identifier (like an SS#) to connect with other databases. There were questions about if the information will be available by geography ? Paul said yes. Scott Good mentioned a software program called Map Point that could plot where people were being served. Paul will check on this to see if it might be useful. Next up was member updates. Janie spoke about leveraging $600,000 in scholarship funds for clients, as well as a $14,980 performance standard wage gain for Youth in Washington County who got jobs. Mike Jordan spoke about the recent Totally Trades conference in their area that 165 girls attended. Mike also spoke about working with the juvenile justice program to get youth connected to local assistance programs instead of formally sentenced. Lisa Hartnet spoke about working with the Police Athletic league on drop out recovery. Ann Wheeler spoke the difficulty in writing employment plans for youth and the WIOA 15% expenditure rate requirement. She mentioned that they will be doing more summer youth employment programs. Meg Harvey spoke about the KUDUR website for career exploration. She also mentioned that they are looking a proficiency based diplomas vs seat time. Kristen spoke about the WINGS program with help connect youth to appropriate resources. Scott Good spoke about Harvard ED X ? an online program that offers courses to everyone. Scott has utilized ED X and has had positive experiences. Dave Wurm spoke about GWNNE working with Long Creek and Mountain View correctional facilities using Perkins funds for training.
