Q: How much does the Sportsman Specialty plate cost?

A: The specialty plate fee is $20.00 in addition to the regular registration fee for both first-time issuance and at time of each renewal. The plates have a unique numbering sequence, beginning with 101-AKA.

Vanity plates are available in the Sportsman Specialty plate series with a maximum of six characters, plus one space or dash. The fee for a vanity plate is an additional $25.00, in addition to the $20.00 specialty plate fee, and the regular registration fee. Sportsman vanity plates cannot duplicate a vanity plate that is already issued in another class of plate. You may search and order a vanity plate online.

Q: Where does the money go?

A: The Sportsman Plate funds will be distributed to the Fish Hatchery Maintenance Fund; the Boat Launch Facilities Fund; the Maine Endangered and Nongame Wildlife Fund; and the Support Landowners Program.

Q: Where can the Sportsman Specialty plates be purchased?

A: At all Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicle Branch Offices and at many town offices. If the plates are not available in your town, they can be purchased at the nearest branch office or by mailing a copy of your registration and a check for $20 ($45 for vanity) made payable to the Secretary of State to: Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Specialty Plate Clerk, 29 State House Station, Augusta, Maine 04333.
