Make a floor plan of your home ...

  • Identify safe places to go in case of fire, hurricane or flood
  • Practice a fire drill

Check your cupboards. Do you have these items? If not, pick them up at the grocery store this week.

  • 1 gallon water (one for each member of the family)
  • 1 can of meat, fruit and vegetables each for each family member (remember special foods for special diets, if needed)
  • 2 rolls of toilet paper
  • Extra toothbrush
  • Travel size toothpaste

As the days and nights grow chilly, wood stoves get fired up. Make sure your is installed correctly, and that burnable items are kept away from it. Make sure your chimney is clean. If your wood is green, take special care to check chimneys and stovepipes to make sure they don't get choked with creosote. Check with your local fire department for more tips on operating wood stoves safely.
