Snow! Stay Safe on the Road

January 12, 2012

9:00 AM

With snow overspreading the state today, followed by some sleet and freezing rain, the National Weather Service is warning of treacherous travel.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place along the entire coastline, and up into eastern and norther Maine.

A Winter Storm Warning is in place for interior southern and western sections. Precipitation was starting in southern Maine early Thursday morning. As the storm moves west to east, the weather advisories take effect later and remain in place later, as late as Friday evening in northern Maine.

Anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of snow in Advisory areas, to 5 to 10 inches in Warning areas, can be expected.

While slippery roads are expected everywhere, travel in southern and western Maine will be made more difficult by periods of heavy snow and very low visibility.

Sleet and freezing rain are also expected to mix in as the storm progresses, keeping the snow amounts down in some locations but adding to poor driving conditions.
